About Off the Rails LB

We began restoring the plant tubs in Leighton Buzzard Station, which had been neglected for at least 10 years, in the Spring of 2010.  Gordon Perham (the then Mayor) repainted the tubs and has agreed to do so each year. In order to buy plants we raised money from voluntary contributions, a small grant from London Midland and sponsorship from local businesses.

We planted a few hundred spring bulbs by Platform 1 in the Autumn 2010 and hope to continue doing this so that there will be a mass of daffodils every Spring.

With South Bedfordshire Friends of the Earth we have created a wild flower garden providing a colourful display and a habitat for butterflies, bees and insects that are a vital food source for birds.

We also attend schools in our area and give talks on rail safety and encouraging rail travel at the same time as holding art competitions and displaying over 100 children's artworks in our station several times a year.

All this is making our station a much better environment for all users. We have now joined ACorP (The Association of Community Rail Partnerships which is a federation of over 60 community rail partnerships and rail promotion groups focused on practical initiatives to provide a more sustainable local railway, improved station facilities, better train services and improved integration with other forms of transport.) and will be entering our work at the station for a National Award this year.

Leighton Buzzard Garden Centre have kindly supported us by replanting the tubs twice a year at less than cost price.

However, we do have to pay for the plants, and need money to keep Off The Rails LB going, which we raise by sponsorship, donations and collections.

We appreciate all the support we get and hope that the work we do helps brighten your day and makes your use of Leighton Buzzard station more enjoyable.
